11/18/09 Dinosaur Jr. @ First Avenue

Dinosaur Jr. detonate 1st Avenue

This enormously anticipated rock show burstively blew thru town like a dangerous category 5 tornado as Dinosaur Jr. ragingly thrilled & rocked the captive enthusiastic throngs at the quintessential premiere live nightclub First Avenue in the mainroom.  The place was pretty packed with enthusiasm from the loyal crowd clearly felt in the air.  Dinosaur Jr. is J. Mascis on guitar, vocals, Lou Barlow on bass, vocals & Murph on drums.

Lou Barlow goes low.....

D-Jr opened the nocturnal night wide jumping in with the scorcher “Thumb”.  Then they performed wickedly amped up ditties “Kracked”, newer heavies like self explanatory “Imagination Blind”, urgency steeped “Pieces”, wondersome “Plans”, &  twangy plea “Crumble”.  All rocked ridiculously.  Many of the songs played were from their most recent 2 stellar records “Beyond” from 2007 & “Farm” from 2009.  Both as well as their older stuff belong in everyone’s collection.

From here, Dinosaur Jr. launched into their classic indie hit “I feel the pain”, forward leaning “Over It”, surreal “Out There”, sonic “Fury”, reflective “Back to your heart” & sensory “Repulsion” before careening recklessly into the show’s finale aural peaks with the timeless anthem “Freak Scene” & future classic “I don’t wanna go there”.  After the seismic shaking of the encores subsided, a random girl approached me & said “thanks for dancing so hard”.  I’d be lying if I said it didn’t make my night.

This high energy band gives me physical bodily felt boosts & makes me wanna live life to the fullest with all I got.  If there could be any higher compliment to give a band, please let me know.  Dinosaur Jr’s distinctive sound is personified by amplified high gain, distortion, feedback, effects & the like.  Their driving music is filled with passion & thrusts toward you like an intense inescapable force.  How often do you hear a great band play only all original music all night.  Not often enough is what I say.

Dinosaur Jr.

This occasion was one of the best hardest hitting live shows I’ve experienced in my ramblings about.  Catch Dinosaur Jr. before they set the whole world burning & in ruins.  Hurry!
